Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM), in partnership with Partners of Parks, the Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation and California Department of Fish and Wildlife, will offer their annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, Nov.18, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at El Dorado East Regional Park (7550 E. Spring St.). Registration begins day-of at 8 a.m. and is free.
“The Youth Fishing Derby is a real opportunity for young anglers in Long Beach to learn new skills, enjoy the outdoors, and make lasting memories,’’ said Mayor Rex Richardson. “It's also a great way for families to bond and create traditions that will last for years to come.”
The Youth Fishing Derby offers a unique experience for youth to enjoy outdoor recreation, learn to fish, get expert fishing tips and have opportunities to win prizes like fishing gear and gift cards. Fishing poles and tackle will be provided to participating youth to use for free during the derby, but youth may also bring their own gear to use. Anyone over age 16 is required to have a California State Fishing License. Vehicle entry to El Dorado Regional Park is free for the event.
For over 20 years the City has partnered with the Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation, a local nonprofit organization that funds fishing programs for youth, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to host the Youth Fishing Derby for local youth. Partners of Parks will also support this year’s event with complimentary snacks and water for youth. “These events are very important to the kids and the community we all serve. Kids need to try new things, have new experiences and for many of these kids it’s their very first-time going fishing,” said Daniel Hernandez, Chairman, Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation. “The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fishing in the City program introduces youth to the sport of fishing.
The Department’s Learn to Fish stations and rod and reel loan program allow youth, who do not have equipment or have never fished before, an opportunity to participate regardless of skill level, and without having to bear the upfront cost that comes with the sport,” said Brian Young, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Fishing in the City Coordinator.
“Partners of Parks supports great recreation programs like the annual Fishing Derby at El Dorado Regional Park,” said Partners of Parks Executive Director Trinka Rowsell. “I encourage all residents to come out for a great day of family fun.” For more information about the event, please call El Dorado Regional Park at 562.570.1771.
